Mercedes Nugent-Head is a French-Caribbean artist who was born on the island of Guadeloupe.

In 2000, after 5 years working in fundraising for museums and theaters, Mercedes joined The Arts Students League of New York and spent a decade studying drawing, painting, color theory, and composition.

During that time, she expanded her training with various seminars, including at the Beaux Arts in Paris and the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.

In 2009, Mercedes joined Chelsea's vibrant artist collective ‘Cold Castle’, and found her calling in portraiture and landscapes.

In 2018, she relocated her studio to Harlem, NY, and used the COVID-19 pandemic to focus on producing work related to her Creole and Afro-Caribbean roots.

Mercedes has participated in group exhibitions in New York City, solo shows in France, and is frequently commissioned for portraits by clients.

The paintings and collages for her upcoming solo show “Negritude and Creolite” (September 2024) embody the visual identities of her African, Carib-Indian, and East-Indian ancestry and explore themes of identity/belonging in a post-colonial world.

You can find her works in private collections in New York, Europe, and Mexico.
